About Whitby |
|
Whitby is a coastal town in Northern England. It is endowed with an incomparable setting on the steep banks of the estuary of the River Esk and is considered as a jewel among towns. Local people call Whitby "T'awd Spot", publicists describe it as "Between the Heather and the Northern Sea" and the Gateway to the National Park. The old London and North east Railway posters described it as "The Drier Coast of England". As well as being very picturesque, a paradise for artists and photographers, it is steeped in history. It used to be one of the foremost shipping and fishing ports in the country where ships, whalers, fishing boats and traders were built. |

Captain James Cook, the famous navigator, sailed from the port on his three great voyages of exploration and his three ships, 'Endeavour', 'Resolution' and 'Adventure' were built in Whitby. The town is also famous for its Abbey, "The Monastery of St Peter", where Lady Hilda was Abbess and the date of Easter was fixed in 664 AD and St Mary's Parish Church with its 199 steps on the East Cliff. There is an enchanting series of walks by cliff, moor, wood and riverside. Really picturesque scenery is abundant in the Whitby area with wonderful sea views of the North Sea, lofty cliffs, heather clad moors and pretty villages and dales. There is so much to see, so do pay Whitby a visit not only to play golf but to explore its many features.
